NAC, short for N-Acetyl Cysteine, is an absolutely phenomenal liver detoxifier.
NAC is used for a host of medical reasons, including acetaminophen/Tylenol overdose, but we are most interested in its ability to protect the liver from alcoholic damage. This compound is the single reason why we built this site. When searching for hangover cures, it is NOWHERE to be found, yet has been the most cost-effective way in preventing and minimizing hangovers we’ve found yet.
How Does NAC Work?
When you drink alcohol, things get very ugly for your liver. Alcohol is metabolized into various components that each have their own effects. One such compound is acetaldehyde, which is 30 times more toxic than alcohol! When your body can’t get rid of this acetaldehyde fast enough, you will start to feel like a total dumpster – ie, hungover.
Your body has methods of “scavenging” for acetaldehyde that hasn’t been metabolized yet. The best two ways of doing this are with cysteine and glutathione. These two compounds have sulfur atoms that can bond with the acetaldehyde and have it safely disposed of.
The problem is, when you binge drink, you overload your liver’s ability to do this. You run out of glutatathione and cysteine and literally become poisoned until you can produce more of these “scavengers”.
But here’s the good news – NAC is the pre-cursor to glutathione, and contains cysteine. So when you take NAC before and after drinking (along with in the morning), your body creates more glutathione and you give it more weapons to clean up the poisonous acetaldehyde… letting you get you on your way to feeling like a normal human being.
NAC works even better when mixed with Vitamin C and B-Vitamins (especially thiamine), as they also contain sulfur and will help scavenge the toxins.NAC Studies on Alcohol
- Studies have shown that NAC effectively attenuates the oxidative stress damage from ethanol (alcohol) in rats[1],[2]
- A 1974 study gave mice doses of acetaldehyde that would have killed 90% of them – but when mixing NAC with Vitamin B1 and Vitamin C, not a single rat died.[3]Obviously you should NEVER take lethal doses of alcohol or acetaldehyde, but it proved that NAC and the vitamins clearly make an impact.
How to Take NAC?
We recommend taking one NAC capsule before drinking, after drinking, and first thing in the morning, with at least 20oz water. This should also be combined with a high-dose Vitamin B Complex and a high-dose Vitamin C capsule.
